What is dependency and how do you apply for it?

Qué es la dependencia y como se solicita?

Dependency is public assistance aimed at people who, due to age, illness, or disability, need support to carry out basic daily activities, such as dressing, eating, personal hygiene, or moving around.
This recognition is part of the System for Autonomy and Dependency Care (SAAD) and can provide access to various resources, both financial and care-related, adapted to each family situation.
📋 Who can apply?
Anyone can apply for dependency if they:
Have physical, mental, or sensory limitations.
Need help from another person for their daily life.
Reside in Spain and meet administrative requirements.
In the case of minors, it can also be applied for when they need significant support.
📝 How is it processed?
The process usually follows these steps:
Submit the application to the social services of your autonomous community.
Provide documentation, such as medical reports, DNI (national identity document), and proof of residency.
Professional assessment, where a technician evaluates the degree of dependency.
Resolution, where a degree (I, II, or III) is assigned.
Assignment of aid, which can be financial or services.
💶 What aid does it include?
Depending on the recognized degree, you can access:
Financial benefit for care in the family environment.
Home help service.
Day center or residence.
Personal assistance.
⏳ Something important you should know
The process can take several months, even more than a year in some communities. Therefore, it is advisable to start the process as soon as possible and follow up on the application.
💙 An important message
Applying for dependency is not "just asking for help"; it is exercising a right. Behind every application there is a family that needs real support to be able to move forward.
